Sugar + Scribe
Sugar and Scribe is bustling from the moment it opens at 7am and keeps La Jolla fed, caffeinated and happy until their doors close at 3:30pm. But the work does not stop there, Sugar & Scribe's team of bakers works tirelessly to fulfill custom cake orders, frost dozens and dozens of cupcakes...the baking is never done! And you can tell that a lot of love, care & maybe a magical dusting of edible glitter goes into each and every item prepared at Sugar and Scribe.
It is the perfect place for a delicious breakfast, an outdoor lunch date, a quick coffee stop (lattes are our favorite), and to pick up cookies, macarons, fruit tarts for a hostess gift or birthday party. Chef Maeve Rochford, Food Network's Holiday Baking Championship Winner, is the owner and executive chef of Sugar and Scribe and believes that "cooking is [her] soul's desire; eating is [her] heart's calling." Maeve's passion and love for cooking is so apparent by the carefully crafted menu that brings together traditional Irish dishes and flavors with fresh and light California cuisine.
We went for lunch and ordered the Artichoke Chicken Salad Sandwich and a White Mocha and let's just say we really, really enjoyed ourselves. The chicken salad comes on homemade focaccia bread and a cold, crisp side salad with cucumbers and arugula. The chicken salad is light and flavorful with hints of lemon and tarragon. Just the perfect amount a food for a lunch on the go. For breakfast, we'd recommend the Lemon Curd Pancakes, Sligo Scramble, and Full Irish Breakfast, a house special. And don't forget to order something fun to sip on for your Weekend Brunch like the S&S Bloody Mary or one of their light and fresh mimosas.
The bright, comfortable and homey atmosphere is also part of the experience at Sugar and Scribe. The walls are decorated with black and white photos of Ireland and personal childhood photos of Chef Maeve. The smell of fresh baked goods and the rainbow wall of sprinkles, colored sugar, nonpareils and candies will make you want to put on an apron, get out your stand-mixer and start baking! You'll be impressed by the knowledgeable & friendly service, too. And if you are lucky, you might just see Chef Maeve.
Sugar & Scribe is a must visit when you are in the village, even just to drop by for a quick coffee and muffin before work. Enjoy....we know you will.
